Why is Kohl's not going to be a department store anymore? ›

Fundamentally, large department stores are at a disadvantage compared to e-commerce giants with more efficient distribution networks. Assuming electricity, labor, and item costs continue to rise, Kohl's core competitive disadvantage will likely become more considerable.

The grocery stores were sold to A&P in 1983, operating under the name Kohl's Food Store, and later Kohl's Food Emporium. A group of investors, led by the senior management, purchased the company in 1986.

The eight brands are: Dana Buchman, Jennifer Lopez, Mudd, Candie's, Rock & Republic, PopSugar, Elle and Juicy Couture. Kohl's announced in March that it would be exiting eight brands, but did not name them.
