What year are the bad Yamaha outboards? ›

The first-generation Yamaha F-Series models, manufactured between 2000-2005, are notorious for severe and unusually fast dry exhaust corrosion problems. The F225 models, in particular, experienced this issue after only 500-700 hours of use.

The best way and the way in which a dealer will identify 'production year' is by entering the serial number into the Yamaha system and cross check the details with the model code. Remember this is 'production year' not year model compliance by warranty registration.

2 + 2 Year Warranty

All Yamaha outboards are covered under a two-year standard Manufacturer's warranty, plus customers who choose to have their four-stroke outboard scheduled services completed by an Authorised Yamaha Outboard Dealer, receive an additional two-year Extended Warranty.

If your outboard has warranty time remaining, then you will need to have your local authorized Yamaha outboard dealer transfer the unit into your name and then you can add the unit in the App or portal. If no warranty is remaining on the unit you will not need to consult the dealer.

Due to Yamaha's design and engineering excellence, their outboards typically last for 1,500 and up to 3,500 hours before needing a major overhaul or being replaced. That being said, the number of hours that a Yamaha outboard engine runs is dependent on the amount of usage and quality of maintenance.

As of January 1/2012 due to EPA regulations all traditional carbureted 2-stroke outboards are no longer manufacturered in nor imported into North America. For Yamaha that means all 2- strokes 115HP and lower.

Fuel Injection for Marine Engines

The 2-stroke V6 OX66-based^*2 engines (150–250 hp) introduced in 1996 were the first Yamaha marine engines with an electronically-controlled fuel injection system.

Yamaha outboards have a life expectancy of between 1,500 and 3,000 hours—when serviced and maintained regularly. Experts recommend that you have a professional service your outboard either once a year or every 100 hours of use.

Yamaha has earned a reputation for producing outboards with excellent fuel economy. Their innovative technologies, such as the High-Pressure Direct Injection (HPDI) system and Variable Camshaft Timing (VCT), contribute to these fuel-efficient performances.

Yamaha outboard motors are manufactured at four production bases: the f*ckuroi South Factory (f*ckuroi City, Shizuoka Prefecture) and group company Yamaha Kumamoto Products Co., Ltd. (Yatsushiro City, Kumamoto Prefecture) in Japan, MBK Industrie in France and Yamaha Motor da Amazonia Ltda. (YMDA) in Brazil.

If you can't find your Factory Warranty Card, you can always use the Yamaha Outboard Customer Support line by calling (866) 894-1626. You'll just need your engine's Primary Identification Number (PID), so they can track your exact model. You can find your PID on your warranty card or on the side of the engine itself.

To find your Yamaha outboard's year and model number, locate the identification plate or sticker on the transom mounting bracket. The ID plate/sticker should be somewhere above the waterline on either the port or starboard side of the bracket.

Yamaha offers a standard 3-year warranty on every new outboard sold with the option to extend it up to 3 additional years (6 years total). This warranty will cover all issues that are deemed by Yamaha to be a factory defect where the product is not performing as it should.
